Trevor Dylan Edwards is the director and owner of Soma Center for Dance in Glasgow, Kentucky. Soma was founded to unearth movement as a vital form of expression through connecting mind, body, and spirit through movement. Trevor is also the collective member of hum.dance collective, a group of creative movement artists spanning different backgrounds and locations who come together to produce meaningful, meditative shows— creating time and space for reflection, growth, and transcendence.
Trevor holds a B.A. in Dance and a Minor in Performing Arts Administration from Western Kentucky University. At university, Edwards performed annually in the WKU Dance Company. Edwards served as the 2017 treasurer, and 2018 president of the National Dance Education WKU Student Chapter. Edwards was awarded a Faculty Undergraduate Student Engagement Grant in 2018 and conducted research on dance film and choreographic storytelling. Edward’s research and choreography was presented in Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Connecticut, and New York City. Edward’s became the 45th WKU student research conference winner. Edwards worked as a teacher’s Assistant for Modern III his senior year of college alongside professor and mentor Meghen McKinley and graduated top of his program with the WKU most outstanding BA in Dance award.
After college, Edwards spent a year living in Nashville,TN teaching at Wrk. Plc. for dancers and dancing professionally with many well-known and respected companies: Numinous Flux of Nashville, TN; Jon Lehrer Dance Company of New York City, New York; and The Stephen Foster Drama Association of Bardstown, Kentucky. Edwards also began to develop work with close colleague Hannah, McCarthy and was inspired on a road trip down south with partner Chris Hobdy to bring the joys of professional dance to his hometown of Glasgow, Kentucky. Soma was born.
Soma now exists to unearth movement as a vital form of expression. Being from this area, Edwards felt that it was his destiny to provide his community with safe, creative, and professional dance experiences that were not previously provided, here. Edwards recently co-founded hum. as an adult expressive outlet that can fill the gaps of diversity and performance in artistic opportunities in this area. One day, Glasgow will be known for its superior dance education and performances!
